Children of British born Mothers

Were you born between 7th February 1961 and 1st January 1983, and was your mother British at the time of your birth?

If the answer to both the above questions is yes, then you may be entitled to register as a British citizen under the amendment to the British Nationality Act 1981, which came into force on 30th April 2003.

For information about the new Citizenship Ceremony, please refer to the note you will find elsewhere on this site.

The basis of the application depends on the manner in which your mother acquired her British nationality, as not all British mothers are included in the category of persons who are now eligible to transmit these rights to their children.

The fee is £188 per applicant, which includes the Citizenship Ceremony fee. If the application is unsuccessful or withdrawn then £68 is refundable.

If you believe you might be entitled to registration, you are welcome to email us details of the circumstances by which your mother acquired her British nationality.
